Tommy Armour (1928) – Shackamaxon

About Tommy Armour (1928) – Shackamaxon

Tommy Armour, winner of the U.S. and Canadian Opens the previous year, led by seven strokes at the start of the final day and shot a pair of 71’s, enough to withstand the charge of defending champion Johnny Farrell, who closed with rounds of 68 and 69.  Armour’s 278 equaled the tournament record set by Macdonald Smith in 1914.  Armour shot a course record 66 in the first round, and never looked back.
