About Jerry Courville, Jr. (2002)
Jerry Courville Jr. had become quite familiar with winning, both on the national stage and across the Met Area, when he received the 2002 Player of the Year Award. 2002 marked the fifth time Courville won the award, which is named for his father.
Surprisingly, in 2002, Courville managed to do everything but win. Yet, strong top finishes took him to the top and another title. He placed third at the New York City Amateur, tied for third at the Ike Championship, and third at the Connecticut Open, and finished in the final eight of the Met Amateur.
In the USGA field, Courville qualified on site at the U.S. Amateur – for the ninth straight year – and won his first match. He also made a memorable run at the U.S. Mid-Amateur, where he fell short of the title to fellow MGA player George Zahringer.
While Zahringer took the Mid-Am title, Courville still beat him out for the season.
