Jeff Thomas (1993)
About Jeff Thomas (1993)
Jeff Thomas had been a recognized face on the national amateur golf scene for years and in 1993, he became a national champion and took home his first Player of the Year title.
In capturing the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship, Thomas broke the record for single-season points. After topping the point standings early in the season, Thomas lost his lead to the Ike Champion George Zahringer. But in becoming the first Met Area golfer since Ralph Howe in 1988 to win the U.S. Public Links, Thomas jumped ahead.
Thomas also had early season victories in the Havemeyer Memorial and the New York City Amateur. He collected a fifth-place finish at The Ike, a tie for low amateur at the New Jersey Open, advanced to the quarterfinals of the Met Amateur and finished second in the Boff Memorial to top off his season.
Finishing with a record breaking 1,178 points, Thomas beat out Zahringer by nearly 400 points.
