About Guido Cribari (1994)

Born and raised in Westchester County, the former Executive Sports Editor of the Gannett Westchester newspaper chain labored loyally for over 50 years in chronicling the people and events of the local golf scene. Through hundreds of columns and features, and in the unique and inimitable style that is his trademark, Guido reported faithfully and candidly on thousands of the Met Area’s amateur and professional careers and helped to keep golf alive and in the forefront of local sports.

But his passion for golf extended far beyond his desk. Guido had a powerful hand in the formation of the Reinach-Turnesa Caddie Scholarship Fund created over 35 years ago, which raised over $2 million for deserving caddies. He was also one of the founding members of the annual Golf Tee Dinner and lent his wholehearted support in the formative years of the Thunderbird Classic (later the Westchester Classic), which raised upwards of $10 million for area hospitals. In addition, Guido had a hand in promoting hundreds of local charity events, including the Ken Venturi Guiding Eyes Classic and the Westchester Tournament of Champions.

Cribari’s impact on local golf was felt everywhere and has earned him the respect and recognition of nearly every local golf organization. He was the first non-professional to earn the Met PGA Sam Snead Award, the initial recipient of the Metropolitan Golf Course Superintendents’ John Reid Award, and one of the earliest recipients of the Met Golf Writers’ Lincoln Warden Award for golf journalism.

The number of golf-related organizations, large and small, that have honored Guido speaks volumes for the work he did for the game over the years, over and above his journalistic responsibilities.
