Greg Rohlf (1998)
About Greg Rohlf (1998)
After falling just short in 1997, Greg Rohlf meant business coming into the 1998 season and captured the Player of the Year award in style. Mentally and physically prepared for the challenge, Rohlf had a breakthrough year.
Starting the season off, Rohlf posted a runner-up finish at the Richardson Memorial, qualified for the U.S. Open, and made it to the quarterfinals of the Travis Invitational. He jumped in the standings early after his second consecutive Westchester Amateur title and runner-up finish at the Hochster Memorial.
However, the true highlight of the season was Rohlf’s win at the Ike Championship held that year at his home club of Wykagyl. Wykagyl was also celebrating its centennial year, which added extra significance to Rohlf’s win.
Rohlf remained a model of consistency throughout the middle of the season, qualifying for the U.S. Amateur, finishing second Low Amateur in the N.Y. State Open, and being on-site medalist in the Met Amateur. His point standings took another big leap after the Met Open, when he came within three strokes of an upset victory. He still finished Low Amateur and those points virtually clinched him the title.
He finished of the season by qualifying on site at the U.S. Mid-Amateur and with a tie for third at the Boff Memorial, totaling 1,257 points for the season.
