About Gil Nichols (1915) – Fox Hills
Gil Nicholls, a 20-year veteran, outlasted young Robert MacDonald from Buffalo in a playoff for his second Met Open title. Nicholls started the playoff poorly, but steadied himself in time to surpass McDonald, whose putting failed him miserably. The end for McDonald came at the 13th hole, where he topped his second shot that landed his ball embedded in a muddy creek bank at the now defunct Fox Hills.
