George Zahringer III & Jonas Saxton (1984)

About George Zahringer III & Jonas Saxton (1984)

For the first time since the Player of the Year Award was started, in 1984 there were co-winners. Jon Saxton and George Zahringer were both named Player of the Year. The point system for determining the award was being revamped, and 1984 acted as a transitional year, so the MGA Management Committee decided it would name two winners.

For Saxton, it was his second consecutive Player of the Year victory. He claimed the title with outstanding performances in both the Met Open and the Met Amateur. He took victories at the Westchester Amateur (for the fourth time in a row) and the Ike Championship. He also qualified for the U.S. Amateur, advanced to the semi-finals of the Richardson Memorial, and the quarter finals of the Travis Memorial.

This marked Zahringer’s fourth overall Player of the Year title, and his second in three years. He found victories in the Met Amateur and the New York State Amateur, and was the first player since John Baldwin (1976) to win both those events in the same season. Zahringer also won the Nassau and Travis Invitationals, qualified for the U.S. Amateur and finished third at the Ike.

With both players successful seasons, it seemed a clear choice to name both Player of the Year.
