About George Zahringer III (2001)

George Zahringer put together one of the best all-around seasons, including four victories, to capture the Player of the Year title for the ninth time, and his first in nine years.

Zahringer’s run began at the Travis Memorial where he reached the finals before falling to three-time Walker Cupper David Eger. Zahringer then headed to the Hochster Memorial, where he won. He showed up confident at the Ike, and edged out Andrew Svoboda by two strokes for another early victory.

At the Met Amateur, he reached the quarterfinals before losing to local rival Jerry Courville Jr. Courville began to make a run for the award, but Zahringer did not back down. He tied for second at the Mittlemark Invitational and took fourth place in the New York State Mid-Amateur, keeping the race close. He collected two more victories at the Boff Invitational and the Nassau Invitational, leaving the U.S. Mid-Amatuer to determine the winner.

Both Zahringer and Courville reached the match play portion, but Zahringer saved his best for last and continued to the finals while Courville lost a close first round match. This performance gave Zahringer 300 points, putting him far ahead of Courville.
