About George Zahringer III (1992)

1992 marked the eighth time George Zahringer was crowned MGA Player of the Year, and his path to the title was a unique one.

Due to work commitments, Zahringer’s season got off to a late start, missing the Richardson, Travis and Havemeyer tournaments. He also failed to qualify for the Met Am, and missed the Met Open for a prior commitment (at the Republican National Convention!) While he came into the season a bit out of practice, that did not stop him.

Zahringer captured the title at both the New York City Amateur at LA Tourette Golf Club, and the Westchester Amateur at The Stanwich Club. With a difficult first round at the Ike, Zahringer rallied and finished second behind Muehr.

Outside the Met Area, Zahringer came up as a quarterfinalist in the U.S. Amateur, and advanced to the second round of the U.S. Mid-Am.

It was a close race, but in the end, Zahringer beat out other Met Area big names, and past Players of the Year, such as Jerry Courville Jr. and Jeff Thomas.
