About George Zahringer III (1989)

George Zahringer III left his mark as the best area amateur of the 1980s when he accepted his record 7th Player of the Year honor in 1989.

Zahringer’s season got off to a quick start and he did not slow down. Beginning with victories in the Richardson, Havemeyer and Hochster Memorials, Zahringer followed up by qualifying for the 1989 U.S. Open.

A memorable victory followed later in the season when Zahringer won the Ike Championship for the first time at his home course, Stanwich. Not only did he win, in the process he set an amateur course record of 68. In the other two MGA majors Zahringer fought hard battles, but came up slightly short. He took second in the Met Am, losing to local legend, Dick Siderowf.  At the Met Open played at the grueling Bethpage Black Course, Zahringer took an early lead with rounds of 67-69, but could not hold on through the final 18, He lost to Bobby Heins in a playoff, settling for second place and Low Amateur honors.

Zahringer blew out the competition in 1989, finishing with 1,055 points, 612 points ahead of the second-place player.
