About George Zahringer III (1986)

By 1986, George Zahringer had become the Met Area’s leading amateur competitor, and it was only fitting that he captured his fifth Player of the Year title at that time.

Zahringer’s bid for the title began with a second-place finish in the Ike. Prior to the Ike in early August, Zahringer had played only ten rounds of golf all season, none competitively, due to family, business and school commitments. Yet, the long hitting champion took little time in establishing his familiar form and followed up his performance in The Ike with a fourth victory in the Met Amateur, finished low amateur, tied for eighth in the Met Open, and qualified on-site for his fifth U.S Amateur.

Zahringer qualified for his second U.S. Mid-Amateur and with his incredible performance, making it to the quarterfinals before losing to the eventual champion, he pulled ahead in the points standings.

With 745 points, Zahringer beat out New Jersey’s Bob Housen, who lead the points race most of the season.
