About Eleanor & Oliver Lazare (2000)
The second-ever dual recipients of the Distinguished Service Award, Eleanor “Ellie” and Oliver “Ollie” Lazare devoted much of their lives to golf and the Met Area. The childhood sweethearts eventually became husband and wife, raised a family in the Met Area and spent their spare time serving the game. They are both longtime members of Metropolis Country Club.
Ellie began her service in golf with the WMGA in the late 60s. She was the chair of the Tournament Committee and President in 1977. She also served as president of the Women’s Tri-Country Golf Association. In similar fashion, Ollie joined the MGA Tournament Committee in 1972. He served as a Board member and tournament official for the WGA, and president of the Westchester Senior Golf Association as well.
Metropolis has remained a home for the couple, where both took on various duties throughout the years, including members of the Green, Tournament, and Golf Committees. Ellie was even the first woman to serve on the club’s Board and Admissions Committee.
The couple has made their greatest impact with the WGA Caddie Scholarship Fund. They both served on the board of directors and took joy in seeing young men and women being given the opportunity to pursue a college education.
