About Cynthia Alexandre (1979)
Born in New York and educated at the Chapin School and Bennington College, Mrs. Cynthia Alexandre spent much of her adult life in service to women’s golf, both local and nationally.
Cynthia was regarded by her peers as an expectational administrator and untiring worker. She has served as president of the Garden State Women’s Golf Association, the Women’s New Jersey Golf Association and the Women’s Metropolitan Golf Association. Her dedication to women’s golf in the Met Area was clearly without equal.
On a national level, Mrs. Alexandre was active through her involvement with the United States Golf Association. She was a member of the USGA’s Women’s Committee for more than ten years and chaired the Committee for two years.This position was recognized as the highest level of appointment that can be accorded a woman in the USGA. During her time as chair, Alexandre held the initial US Women’s Public Links Championship and officiated many other USGA championships, including the US Women’s Open at Brooklawn.
Cynthia Alexandre’s contributions to the game of golf through the years were always offered in a totally unselfish and professional manner. Her lifelong devotion to the game enabled women in both the Met Area and across the country to enjoy tournament golf to its fullest.
In winning the 1979 DSA Award, Cynthia Alexandre came the first woman ever to receive the award.
