About Craig Wood (1940) – Forest Hill

Craig Wood, professional at Winged Foot, shattered all records for a major tournament, shooting rounds of 64-66-68-66=264 at Forest Hill to win by 11-strokes over Ben Hogan, who finished five strokes ahead of the rest of the field.  His sixteen-under-par finish broke the Met Open record by fourteen strokes.  The gallery of almost 2,500 was greater than any in recent years.  His first-round 64 was the lowest ever in the Met Open, and his 36-hole and 54-hole scores equaled the lowest ever in any American tournament of consequence.
