About Charlie Robson (2003)
Former Executive Director of the Metropolitan PGA, Charlie Robson is widely regarded as one of the true servants of the game. In his time at the Met PGA, he was constantly seen going far above and beyond what was required of him, and devoted his actions to better the game and the Met Area.
After a brief stint as a golf professional at Plandome Country Club on Long Island, Robson began working for the Met PGA in 1972. With fairness, patience and good business sense, he transformed a fledging association of 250 members into a powerful organization of more than 700 golf professionals. Robson is responsible for expanding the section’s tournament schedule from 20 events a year to more than 125 days of competitions, including tournaments such as the New York State Open and the Met PGA Head Professional Championship. He also started the Met PGA Merchandise Show further promoting relationships between sales representatives, manufacturers and club professionals, and made incredible strides Junior Golf in the Met Area.
His past experience as a club professional inspired him to establish hiring guidelines for clubs to help ensure better job security for their professionals, as well as ensure better benefits and compensation. He also helped professionals enhance their standing in the golf community by developing innovative educational programs designed to help them become better players, administrators and entrepreneurs.
Through his work, Robson was a driving force in establishing the Met PGA’s “identity” as one of the most respected PGA sections in the country. In 2013, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the Metropolitan Golf Writers Association.
