About Tony Wimpfheimer (1996)
Born in Manhattan, Charles Anthony “Tony” Wimpfheimer was educated at Deerfield Academy and Williams College and served his country as a captain in the Air Force. Shortly thereafter he joined Sunningdale Country Club, where he served on the Board of Governors and numerous committees. By profession, Tony was an editor and served in the dual capacity of Vice President and Managing Editor of Random House, one of the world’s largest publishing firms.
It was Tony’s knowledge of the trade and insight into all facets of the publishing world that made him a major player in helping to guide The Met Golfer from its creation in 1983 to the nation’s top association publication. He devoted himself for years to maintaining the magazine’s high standards with regard to editorial content, ad sales and distribution.
Tony’s involvement with golf and the MGA stretched well beyond The Met Golfer. In the communications and public relations areas, he served on MGA and USGA Committees that have helped both organizations better communicate their messages to the golfing public. As President of the Met Golf Writers Association, Tony helped to re-establish the National Awards Dinner as one of the nation’s premier golf events and a major fund-raising vehicle for the local caddie scholarship funds.
Wimpfheimer was also an active member of the MGA Tournament Committee, served on the MGA Executive Committee, and was one of the founding members of the MGA Foundation’s Board of Directors.
Whether it was laboring over an article for The Met Golfer, getting golfers started on the first tee at the crack of dawn, or putting together a stellar dais for the Golf Writers’ Dinner, Tony gave his all as few other volunteers have done. Today he remains an active member of The Met Golfer’s editorial committee.
