About Byron Nelson (1936) – Quaker Ridge
Young Texas-born Byron Nelson, assistant professional at Ridgewood, sank a clutch five-foot putt for bogie on the 16th hole at Quaker Ridge to preserve his two-stroke lead. Craig Wood finished second, two strokes behind Nelson, with Paul Runyan one stroke behind him. Nelson made a spectacular par 4 on the last hole, almost sinking a 60-foot chip after his ball struck a spectator standing near the green. Nelson’s final round 71 gave him a 72-hole total of 283. He credits the win with launching his career.
