Amateur Andrew Svoboda, a senior at St. John’s and a former Met Junior Champion, shot a first-round 67 at Metedeconk National and never trailed, winning the Met Open by five strokes. Richard Massey of Darlington, a veteran of the Canadian, South American, and South African tours, finished second and collected the winner’s share of $23,000 from the $125,000 purse. The following year Svoboda would win the Met Amateur at The Stanwich Club, winning 4 & 3 against Tyler Randol.
