About Andrew Giuliani (2006)
With consistency and maturity throughout the 2006 season, Andrew Giuliani found himself in the top spot in the Player of the Year Points standings. Finishing in or near the top ten in seven of his nine MGA events, resulted in Giuliani adding his name to the list of the Met Area’s finest amateurs.
Andrew, son of former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani and author/actress Donna Hanover, was accustomed to the spotlight and the pressure of big situations, and that certainly showed on the golf course.
Coming off his freshman season at Duke University, Giuliani quickly became a rising star in the Met Area. He finished runner-up at the Havemeyer Invitational and fifth at the Hochster Memorial, giving him solid points early on, but leaving him far behind early leader Allan Small.
The season picked up as he collected a second place finish at the Ike Championship, Low Amateur at the New York State Open, and qualified for the U.S. Amateur. Giuliani’s big push came, however, at the 2006 Met Amateur at Baltusrol. After an 81 in the first round of stroke play qualifying, Giuliani fired a 3-under 68 on the lower course to advance to match play where he fought to the semifinals match. This performance moved him into a solid first place in the point rankings.
Although he returned to school, Giuliani was not done. A quick trip back from Duke to win the Bergen County Amateur cemented his position as top amateur golfer in the Met Area.
Finishing the season 92 points ahead of Small, Giuliani became the then youngest winner of the award.
