About Dr. Richard Silver (1982)
Dr. Richard Silver was a thoroughly dedicated official and the kind of gentleman without whom competitive golf would have long ago faded away. Frequently logging over 40 hours of volunteer time per week while maintaining a full-time dental practice, Dr. Silver was a tireless devotee to studying and enforcing the rules and regulations necessary to maintaining the standards of the game.
Dr. Silver’s expertise in this area made him an invaluable resource both locally and nationally. As a member of the MGA’s Tournament and Rules Committees since for over 20 years, he spent countless hours officiating at MGA tournaments as well as overseeing the selection, education and activities of the MGA’s Tournament Committee.
Not to limit himself to local events, Dr. Silver also served on the USGA’s Tournament Committee and Public Links Committee. A public links player himself, he worked diligently to promote and guide the growth of the National Championship in the Met area. In addition, he was a main contributor of the Ike Championship for many years and officiated at numerous Anderson Memorials.
Most importantly, throughout his many years of work for the MGA and the USGA, Dr. Silver maintained a strong enthusiasm for the game that was always present in his easy manner and somewhat renowned sense of humor.
