About Harry Cooper (1980)
“Light Horse” Harry Cooper is perhaps best known in the Metropolitan Area as an outstanding teacher of golf. For 27 years as head pro at the Metropolis Country Club in White Plains, Harry shared his expertise with countless golfers, helping them to improve and refine their games.
Harry’s ease as an instructor stemmed from a long and distinguished career as a professional competitor. He was probably the best professional golfer in the United States from 1927-1937. Among his biggest victories were those in the 1934 Western Open, and 1932 and 1937 Canadian Open. While he never captured a National Open, Masters, or PGA title, Cooper was an avid winner in Met Area events. In 1955, at age 51, he captured the Met PGA title and in 1957, he won the Met PGA Senior Championship.
Another interesting twist to Harry’s career was his occupation for several years as a seagoing professional aboard the S.S. Homeric where he gave clinics and private lessons aboard ship!
Throughout his 58 years as a golf professional, Harry Cooper acted as a constant example of a dedicated competitor and skillful, willing instructor. His support for the game, as both a teacher and competitor, was unfailing.
