About Walter Hagen (1919) – North Shore

U.S. Open winner Walter Hagen defended his Met Open title successfully.  The Oakland Hills professional had a comfortable four-stroke lead until he pulled his tee shot into a patch of mounds, followed by a hooked approach on the 18th hole into that landed in the trees and under the branches with a bunker between his ball and the green. His attempt to escape hit the mound behind the bunker, rolling back his ball into the sand, leaving his bunker shot 15 feet from the pin. From there, he calmly rolled in his putt and collected the $250 winner’s prize.
