About Johnson Wagner (2001) – Bethpage Black
Johnson Wagner became the first amateur since George Zahringer III in 1985 to win the Met Amateur and Met Open in the same season. The 21-year-old collegian started the final round six strokes behind Rick Hartmann, and shot a five-birdie 66 over Bethpage Black. He caught Hartmann after 12 holes, and had a three-stroke lead after 16 holes. Ironically, Zahringer failed to make the cut for the first time in over 20 years at the Met Open.
