The Player of the Year Award was announced in 1976 by the MGA as a new award, to be presented annually, to “honor the New York-area amateur who complies the best record in selected local, national and international events in one season.” A point ranking system was determined in which players accumulate points based on their performances in the designated tournaments.
Siderowf finished the season with 680 points, 350 points over Bill Britton, and 375 over Jerry Courville. In addition to his overseas victory, Siderowf had a strong season on the home front. He finished as runner-up in the Northeast Amateur and recorded three match play victories in the U.S. Amateur, giving him a commanding lead in the final points standings.
